I’ve literally always heard GOP and glazed over it. Well, I finally looked it up so some of you don’t have to.

If you were ignorant like me (probably not), then you are just now learning that GOP actually stands for Grand Old Party in reference to the Republican Party.

The nickname emerged in the 1870s-1880s signifying freedom and equality as the Republicans fought for civil rights and protecting black citizens’ rights, preserving the Union, and supporting economic development and industrialization.
